Unique NYC family activity spotlight – foraging!

Looking for something unique to do with the family?

Have you ever thought of going on a foraging adventure with your kids? Foraging is the search for wild resources and can include mushroom picking, discovering a multitude of edible plants, healing plants, and more. It’s a great way to learn about nature and learn about the world in which we live through the natural habitation of plants that feed animals and humans. Hopefully, you will not get lost in the forest, but if you ever do, these foraging adventures can save you.

You don’t have to go far in search of a foraging adventure either, there are plenty of great places for foraging adventures in New York. We interviewed a foraging expert – “Wildman” Steve Brill. Steve runs local tours, the purpose of his hands on program is to learn about the environment and get back in touch with nature. Steve says that by studying foraging and nature, we enjoy our renewable resources and reaffirm our commitment to preserving and rebuilding our ecological riches.

What do kids learn when they are foraging?

They learn to identify and use wild edible plants and mushrooms. They discover how interesting science and nature can be, and how valuable our local and global ecosystems are.

Why do you like working with families?

Everyone has experiences and perspectives to share.

Do you have any fun stories about kids getting into foraging and making it a hobby?

My daughter, Violet, now 14, began attending my tours when she was 2 months old. She’s been co-leading half my tours since she was 9 and wants to teach foraging when she grows up. My only problem is that she finds all the plants and mushrooms (see the photo below of a 30-lb. chicken mushroom she spotted and identified when she was 10 from a moving car) faster than me, and steals all my jokes!

Other people have e-mailed me that they’ve taken on environmental careers, such as world-wide ecotourism, because they’d been first exposed to nature when they were kids. An architect first discovered nature through me when he was a child, and now heads an organization that blocked a subway from running through Forest Park in Queens on an abandoned railroad line, and is turning the tract into a beautiful walking and biking trail

What is the benefit of learning about vegetation?

They learn about the most delicious and healthful foods in the world, how they grow and survive, and how they function in our local ecosystems.

What are some of the best local family friendly local spots for foraging?

There are many around New York, such as Prospect Park, Forest Hills, Inwood and more. Check out the tour schedule to find all the best places and learn foraging. https://gobambino.com/merchants/show?id=24
